Two years ago, Herbert Dice, chairman of the Volkswagen Group, said that Volkswagen could overtake Tesla in the EV race. Today, however, he is adamant that Europe’s largest automaker will actually overtake Tesla to become the world’s largest electric car dealer by 2025.
Dice says CNBC That Tesla is currently the “leader in the EV” because it is the most digital car company by far. He added, “We still aim to hold on to sales by 2025 and possibly overtake,” he added.
Dice said Tesla has been able to deliver good results and high returns with its business model, but reiterated its belief that Volkswagen could close the sales gap soon. Its main focus now is to address supply chain issues in order to increase car production in the next few months.
“I think for Tesla too, ramping is probably a little more challenging now. They are opening new plants and we are trying to keep pace. We think in the second half of the year, we’re going to build some momentum, “said Dice.
While the auto industry continues to be plagued by supply crises, Dice says there are some positive signs on the horizon. Semiconductor deficits, for example, are expected to ease by the middle of the year, although other industry figures suggest the problem will continue until 2023.
