The Shelby GT500-H Hertz puts the insane 900 hp in the hands of tenants

In the case of American muscle you won’t find more apple pie than Shelby American and Hertz. Again, the two companies are reviving their long-running rent-a-racer program this summer, teaming up to offer travelers across the United States access to a triad of new Mustang Shelby muscle cars with 900-plus horsepower. But, what is the price tag of $ 399-per-day price tag and additional restrictions? For research purposes only, we flew a quick flight to Las Vegas and the Shelby Museum, took a straight highway behind the wheels of the convertible GT-H and the giant GT500-H to Seven Magic Mountain and returned to collect more data.

The GT-H comes in convertible and coupe form and starts with your standard Shelby GT, a 5.0L V8 based on the Mustang GT Premium that delivers around 450 horsepower. There are no specific horsepower details for any Hertz or Shelby vehicles yet, but the company will have those numbers buttoned up when the car hits Hertz airport locations across the country. Both the GT-H and the 900-plus-horsepower GT500-H add special Shelby bits for both look and performance, including the Borla Cat-Back Performance Exhaust, a stunned-width wheel kit, all-weather Michelin with 20-inch aluminum wheels. Tires, and a Shelby-designed deep-draw hood, upper grille, fascia winglets and taillight panels. The convertible gets a special light bar, and of course, both the coupe and the convertible get the featured Hertz-Gold racing stripe and the Shelby serial numbers that will be added to the Shelby registry.

Because both Hertz and Shelby expect these vehicles to continue to bring higher prices to the secondary market by the end of 2022, when time is running out in the hands of tenants. The 1966 edition, which marked the first appearance of the Rent-a-Racer / Hertz-Shelby tie-up, is now at auction for about $ 200,000. The 2006, 2007 and 2016 models also go for a premium price in the secondary market, according to Shelby and Hertz executives. Both Shelby and Hertz said the general public would be “surprised and delighted” to have access to these powerful cars, and both companies have spoken at length about the sales and rental benefits that result from this program.

“The Hertz deal saved Shelby in 2006,” Patterson said in an interview with Autoblog. “The company was financially mismanaged and the Hertz deal dragged it down.”

Shelby American and Hertz are not unfamiliar with both financial and business issues. While Shelby was not in the same position in the early 2000s, the company said the epidemic deficit had led to some of its production slowdowns, especially since it relied on Ford products. According to Shelby American, it sends about 1,200 cars a year to customers. Hertz, on the other hand, has just gone bankrupt and is working through a rather messy legal battle, with thousands of tenants being accused of stealing Hertz cars.

The tie-up brings the two companies together for a three-year deal and more cars are coming. The Mustang Shelby GT-H and the much more powerful Mustang Shelby GT500-H will be available for rent for the first time this summer. It is possible that one of these additional new cars could be a Shelby F-150 and / or a Bronco, but neither company will confirm this. Shelby says the company’s production of Mustangs and F-150s largely reflects Ford and is considering making it a Shelby Bronco, but the project is still in the air.

We first hit the road on the GT-H convertible. It provides comfortable cruising and plenty of power for PokāĻŋ drivers to pass on the highway. Sonorous exhaust notes ring in your body when you press the accelerator and the bramble and desert brush become blurred. Even at highway speeds, there are still plenty of runways to push the car away easily – especially on a straight line. Sadly, the road to the Instagram-famous Seven Magic Mountains landmark is as straight as an arrow, and with so little time allotted for the drive, the GT-H didn’t really have a chance to test anything beyond straight-line speeds.

At the stopover, we stopped to take some pictures, take some shots from the car, and swap cars. After all, the GT500-H is the giant we want to drive the most, and the one most people want to rent. Only 25 of these cars will be made – and they will bring a hefty daily price tag: $ 399 per day with a 70-mile daily limit. Exceed that limit and you’ll be charged 0.75-per-mile overtime. Also you cannot rent these for one way trips and like all fares, you must be at least 25 with a valid license.

Hertz Axis said there would be other restrictions to protect cars from being driven out of the United States, although they did not elaborate further on the pressure. Laura Smith, Hertz’s Global Sales, Marketing and Customer Experience EVP Shelby Mustangs will not confirm whether vehicles will have active tracking devices, yes, Hertz only wants to ensure that customers are safe in any vehicle. They rent. Most rental fleets use some limited GPS tracking to detect vehicles when there is a breakdown or emergency, although they do not actively track things like speed. In the GT500-H, that would be a real factor.

Underneath its black and gold color, the Shelby Mustang GT500-H is much like the Shelby Mustang GT500KR – a 900-plus horsepower, rear-wheel-drive beast, at least on paper. Based on the GT500-H, the GT500-H gets a 5.2-liter supercharged V8 with a huge, gold, 3.8-liter whiple supercharger, similar to the GT500KR (minus gold color). It features a new half-shaft, a Borla Cat-back exhaust, 20-inch aluminum monoblock wheel shades on the Michelin Pilot Sport 4 performance tires, brambo brakes painted in gold and emblazoned with the Hertz logo, and several special Hertz. And Shelby’s visual touch around the car. The GT500-H also gets the same dry carbon-fiber hood with functional scoop and vent from KR. According to Patterson, the suspension is specially tuned to offer comfort and sport balance. Indeed, those performance gear adds far more than many well-heeled tenants can handle or even know what to do.

On the road, Supercharger Huin Hall is an invitation to push the accelerator a little further and it will be a delight for muscle car fans. With approximately 900-plus horsepower, it goes without saying that you’ll never aspire for power, even at highway speeds. 60 miles per hour from Zero is clearly faster, and 70 miles per hour and faster. There is no denying that the GT500-H brings a wicked smile to anyone who either sees it fast or gets a chance to drive it. It is a large American muscle that pushes its performance to the maximum and it is a rocket ship.

Again, we could do nothing more than sink it directly south to the I-15 on the GT500-H, which meant there was no chance of driving it on the detour. Rest assured, though, that just as much power is going on the rear wheel, it will slide. Inexperienced hands, let’s just say that Hertz seems to have a terrible belief in tenants’ driving ability. Executives seem unprepared by the challenge. Smith said that similar to the Hertz program that is purchasing 100,000 Teslas and 65,000 Polyester, customers will have to go through a kind of digital training tour before renting the GT-H and GT500-H to understand how much power they will handle.

At the end of the day, riding a Shelby Mustang GT500-H isn’t a bad way to spend an afternoon – if you have $ 399-per-day to spend, don’t go over 70 miles and it will happen. Visit one of the limited rental locations, which includes the four cities of Las Vegas, Phoenix and Florida. These are obviously all vacation spots, so it seems clear that the Hertz Shelby Mustangs were envisioned as an exciting part of the trip, not just your transportation during it. There is no denying that both will bring a memorable experience for tenants across the country.
