The Mercedes-Benz T-Class is a city-friendly van with Renault bones

Mercedes-Benz has launched a new nameplate in its portfolio: the T-Class. The name will appear on a Ford Transit Connect-sized passenger van that is closely related to the third generation Renault Kangaroo and was originally designed for the European market.

If the aforementioned description seems familiar, then the T-Class is probably not the first Mercedes-Benz entry into this segment. This is the second time the Stuttgart-based firm has borrowed a kangaroo from Renault, but to distinguish it from the standard Citin, it has named it the last-generation model Citin Traveliner, the commercial version. Presumably, the T-Class looks a lot like the latest variant of the Cargo-Holling Seaton, although it features a more advanced-looking design characterized by a styling cue similar to the specific wheel design.

The standard configuration of the T-Class is 177 inches long, 73 inches wide and 71 inches long. The range will be expanded later with a long-wheelbase model during production. It comes standard with a hatch, but buyers can configure the van with a separate rear door.

From the driver’s seat, the biggest indication that the T-Class is a kangaroo in a Mercedes-Benz costume is the position of the shifter. Steering wheel, instrument cluster design, dashboard shape, round air vents and climate control system buttons are specific to the German version. The standard equipment list includes the well-known MBUX infotainment system and a seven-inch touchscreen for LED interior lighting, and shoppers can add features such as yellow interior trim and leather upholstery by going ahead with the trim classification.

At launch, the available engines will have a petrol-burning 1.3-liter four-cylinder and a 1.5-liter turbo-diesel four in the palette, each provided in two modes of tuning. The former produces 102 horsepower and 147 pound-feet of torque in the T160; In the T180 this figure rose to 131 and 176, respectively. On the diesel side of the range, the T160d puts 95 horsepower and 191 lb-ft of torque under the driver’s right foot, with the T180d’s output rated at 116 and 199, respectively, although a temporary overboost function increases the torque to 217.

Front-wheel-drive is the only configuration available, it doesn’t seem to be an alternative to the 4matic all-wheel-drive, and a six-speed manual transmission comes standard. That’s right: the T-Class comes with a Mercedes-Benz star and three paddles Alternatively, two turbodiesel engines and a 131-horsepower petrol-powered unit with a seven-speed dual-clutch automatic transmission can be optionally ordered.

Mercedes-Benz dealers across Europe will start accepting T-Class after 2022 and we are told that the price will start below 30,000 euros, representing around $ 31,700 at current conversion rates. However, this does not suggest that we will see T-Class in America.
