The full US Volvo lineup for 2023 is a light hybrid, plug-in hybrid or EV

The entire 2023 Volvo lineup in the U.S. will be light hybrid, plug-in hybrid or all-electric, the automaker confirmed in a press release Wednesday.

Volvo sees it as the only pure electric vehicle by 2030 and a step towards becoming carbon-neutral by 2040.

With the XC40 and XC90 crossover SUVs and V60 cross country station wagons receiving light hybrid powertrains (badges B4, B5, and B6) as standard equipment, Volvo has filled the last non-electrifying void in its US lineup.

Volvo currently sells two all-electric models in the United States. The XC40 Recharge is an electric version of the XC40, whereas the C40 Recharge is a low-roof XC40 derivative that is only available in electrical form.

The 2023 model year brings a refresh for the XC40 recharge, but Volvo has not yet announced plans to bring the previously announced single-motor version for Europe to the United States.

On the first drive, we got a C40 recharge, such as the XC40 recharge, to offer a comfortable ride, good feature set and reasonably spacious interior – although the C40 trades some functions for style.

Plug-in hybrids like XC90 Recharge are a growing part of the lineup. In addition to the XC90, the Volvo XC60 offers plug-in hybrid versions of the SUV, S60 and S90 sedans and V60 wagons. Bigger battery packs and other changes for the 2022 model year give more electric range, more power and one-pedal driving.

A fully electric version of the XC90 is also on the way, and because of the contrast between the C40 and XC40 recharge models, which use a platform shaped with a T-shaped battery pack and internal-combustion models, the electric XC90 is an EV of Volvo’s next-generation SPA2 platform. Specific skateboard versions are expected to be used which can accommodate a flat battery pack.
