The electric Volkswagen Amarok pickup truck is under consideration

Volkswagen is almost ready to unveil the second generation Amarok, a pickup sold on a long list in the global market. Although the truck will be powered by four- and six-cylinder engines, the Wolfsburg-based company has confirmed that an electric version is being debated. Amarok is not expected to sell in the US market.

“We’re looking for a pure electric version. It’s still early, but that’s something we’re considering [Amarok’s] Life Cycle, “Lars Krause, board member for marketing Volkswagen commercial vehicles, revealed in a recent interview with the Australian website. Drive.

Krause added that, if built, the electric Amarok would be the only electrified model in the portfolio. He ruled out launching a gasoline-electric plug-in hybrid truck because his team was “not satisfied with the electrical range” of the setup Ford would use. Volkswagen’s next-generation Amarok and Ford’s new Ranger are closely related under sheet metal, although they do not look the same.

What is clear is that an electric option will not be offered at launch. However, according to the same report, building a battery-powered Amarok is technically possible. “Of course we need to fix some components,” Krauss explained, but the body-on-frame architecture could take a larger lithium-ion battery pack and an electric powertrain. If this is possible in Volkswagen, it is probably possible in Ford; The two truck parts share a number. However, Ford did not comment on the disadvantages of viewing the electric version of the new Ranger.

“Yes, we are seriously considering an electrical variant,” Krauss summarized.

Meanwhile, the next-generation Amarok is set to launch in late 2022 with a global engine palette that will include four diesel-powered options, including a petrol-burning and displacement between 2.0 and 3.0 liters. Longer than its predecessor, the truck will offer rear-wheel-drive and permanent all-wheel-drive options and two or four doors, although not every configuration will be offered in every market.
