BMW continues its 50th birthday celebrations with the unveiling of a commemorative version of the M3. Limited to 500 units for North America, the M3 version 50 Jahre BMW M is available in five colors borrowed from the palette offered for previous generations of models.
The M 50 Jahre (meaning “50 years” in German) has been created exclusively for the North American market. Enthusiasts will have five colors to choose from: E30-generation M3 to Cinnabar Red, E36-based model Techno Violet, E46 M3 seen Interlagos Blue, Fire Orange III available in the Lime Rock Park version. E92 M3, and Lime Rock Gray from the last generation M3 CS. BMW notes that the Techno Violet and Interlagos Blue were brought back to its color palette, especially for the limited-edition M3.
Each 50 Jahre model, regardless of paint color, comes with Orbit Gray and Fake Style 826M wheels finished in either red, blue or black brake caliper. Alternatively, cars fitted with optional carbon-ceramic braking systems receive a gold-colored caliper. The list of standard features includes a carbon fiber front splitter, a carbon fiber roof panel, a carbon fiber spoiler on the trunk lid, and a tail pipe made of carbon fiber and titanium. And, of course, the traditional symbol unveiled for BMW M’s 50th birthday is found on both ends.
Inside, the M3 50 Jahre gains a numbered aluminum blade on the center console, M-color contrast stitching, and an M stripe on the headrest. Play seats are standard for front passengers, and buyers can order carbon fiber bucket seats at extra cost. It’s not a stripe-out, track-ready special, though: the standard executive and parking assistance packages and a wireless device charger.
BMW did not make any mechanical changes. Based on the Competition xDrive variant, the 50 Jahre is powered by a 3.0-liter Straight-Six that is twin-turbocharged to produce 503 horsepower and 479 lb-ft of torque. It rotates four wheels via an eight-speed automatic transmission, although the xDrive all-wheel-drive system has a mode that channels the engine output to the rear wheels.
The 2023 BMW M3 Edition 50 Jahre BMW M starts at 96,695 with a mandatory $ 995 destination charge, and production will begin in July 2022. There is no word on how BMW will allocate 500 units, but we recommend staying in line as soon as possible. It would be easy to identify a version 50 Jahre owner at an airport: each example would be supplied with a BMW M-brand carry-on suitcase.
Not forgetting about the BMW standard M3. Starting for the 2023 model year, the iDrive infotainment system is the eighth generation sedan ship on a curved display featuring a 12.3-inch digital instrument cluster and a 14.9-inch touchscreen.
