Reuse of Lunaz Upcycled Electric Garbage Trucks, a Model for Carbon Reduction

UK firm Lunaz claims it is the world’s most advanced upcycled electric vehicle – a reusable vehicle that makes it recyclable with many light carbon footprints.

Lunaz, whose investors include soccer legend David Beckham, says the results – ranging from the late Mercedes-Benz Econic garbage truck, and rebuilding them as EVs – are also the world’s first upcycled electric recycled truck.

The department that built the truck, along with Lunaz Applied Technologies (LAT), part of the Lunaz Group, Lunaz Powertrain and Lunaz Design. The latter carried projects that initially caught our attention: some beautiful electric transformations of the classic Jaguar, Bentley and Rolls-Royce models — decaying examples that are no longer in running condition and “in danger” of being completely lost and retaining most. Otherwise their real appearance.

While this may create some strong reactions in car-collector circles and those who want to keep the classics as they are, what Lunaz is doing with commercial trucks is probably much less controversial.

Lunaz says it is modular yet brand agnostic, so it will blend and match existing ingredients to combine the best solution for each truck. Its converted trash trucks are “dramatically cheaper” than buying a new electric truck, it says, and they save up to 80% on embedded carbon (production-related) for choosing this type of truck as opposed to a new electric truck. Assuming they are comparable in efficiency, this could be a significant amount of low carbon footprint for the lifetime of the car.

Upcycled electric garbage trucks use modular battery packs ranging from 275 kwh to 400 kwh for different route lengths. The peak torque is 5,162 lb-ft, and borrowing an “adequate” tradition from Rolls-Royce, presumably, Lunaz did not reveal a horsepower figure, saying it was “fast enough to prevent the traffic formation behind it.”

Inside, the Advanced Trash Track will include a 12-inch instrument screen, as well as two 10-inch display screens, one will be used for displaying the camera and the other will provide Apple CarPlay and Android Auto integration. There is also a wireless charging tray. And Lunaz says it applied the same materials to the UEV interior from its upcycled Bentley.

There is also an electric power take-off to access industrial equipment or worksheets with a “reusable” application.

This type of up-to-date commercial electric truck has been done before, though probably not in the same integrated fashion. Colorado Lightning emulators use commercial trucks and vans, or motor coaches, and update them as all-electric. And a few years before the Ford F-150 Lightning arrived, Montreal’s EcoTuned brought an EV kit that they could install on a used F-150 at a cost of $ 23,000 to $ 30,000.

In the United States, compressed natural gas (CNG) is the most common fuel for new garbage trucks. So far, the Mac LR electric garbage truck has entered the United States as a new model. New York City used one protester in 2020 and announced seven purchases from that company last year. In the Netherlands, the DAF is testing all electric garbage trucks.

On the car side, the closest thing we can get is its Mini Recharged program — in which the Mini itself oversees the conversion of the classic Mini Cooper into an electric drive. So far that program is only available in the UK.

Lunaz says its trucks are warranty as new, and the level of detail here could well differ, as it is more in his home UK and probably beyond.
