Production version bows, will be made this year

After testing with customers, the Freightliner Icascadia electric semi-truck debuted in production-ready form on Monday.

Production is set to begin at Freightliner’s Portland, Oregon, factory later this year, the company said in a press release. Freightliner claims to have about 700 orders for the truck.

Production will be available with eCascadia single or tandem e-excel. A 291-kwh battery pack is available with a single drive axle. A 438-kwh pack with single or tandem-drive configuration is available.

The Freightliner cites a maximum 230-mile range for single-drive powertrains with large battery packs, 155 miles for smaller packs and 220 miles for tandem-drive powertrains. Freightliner is at least a small improvement over the nearly 150-mile range of preproduction versions tested with customers over the past few years.

Outputs will range from 320 hp and 470 hp, with a maximum gross combined weight (GCW) of 82,000 pounds, Freitliner said.

Guardian Daimler also plans to call the services a “holistic ecosystem”, including helping customers with charging stations and supporting solar and energy-saving installation.

Freightliner unveiled its first eCascadia pre-production models in 2019. Daimler says the trucks have saved more than a million real-world miles last year – an added bonus of low driver fatigue and low emissions.

California is looking to eCascadia for a large portion of the experimental fleet of 100 electric trucks. Of these, 80 will be eCascadias, the other 20 will be Volvo VNR Electric semifinals. Tesla, which is missing from this and other electric-truck collections, whose CM has been delayed until 2023.
