Porsche 718 Cayman GT4 ePerformance Preview Electric Racer

Last year, we wondered if Porsche’s mission and concept was a last-ditch effort to tease out its 718 boxstar and all-electric versions of the Cayman. Well, we can all stop wondering. Porsche confirmed this week that it is testing a 718 Cayman GT4 ePerformance that employs electric powertrain components from the Mission R concept, and that it is faster – the 911 GT3 Cup car faster. Porsche thinks the platform could be a potential jumping-off point for a new spec racing series that is the existing Carrera Cup.

In addition to employing all-wheel drive instead of the standard GT4’s RWD setup, the GT4 e-performance has some similarities with the existing 718 Cayman GT4 ClubSport. The powertrain was completely removed from Mission R (shown above), which could produce over 1,000 horsepower in its most performance-friendly setting. The GT4 ePerformance is about 56 inches (14 centimeters) wider than the prototype ClubSport, says Porsche, and requires about 6,000 unique new parts.
