Nissan is developing highly accurate automatic collision avoidance technology – the next generation

What is essential for autonomous driving? It is capable of avoiding collisions in any situation, Nissan says. To realize the future of self-driving cars, Nissan has begun developing an improved version of its collision avoidance system.

The new system – dubbed “Ground Truth Perception Technology” – will allow Nissan vehicles to automatically perform collision-avoidance techniques and with a high degree of accuracy. It uses next-generation LiDAR technology (the most important component here), a combination of radar and camera to do this strategy.

According to the automaker, the new system is able to detect the shape and distance of objects, as well as the structure of the area around the vehicle in real time. It uses this format of information to instantly perform situation analysis, judgment and avoidance strategies.

Also, it can detect slow traffic and road obstacles from a distance, as well as perform lane changes accordingly. Nissan says it is more effective in areas where detailed map information is not available, such as deep-sea tunnels or underground parking lots.

Takao Asami, Nissan’s senior vice president of global R&D, said: “Nissan is the first to market a number of advanced driver assistance technologies. When we look at the future of autonomous driving, we believe that it is important for owners to feel extremely confident about the safety of their vehicles.

“We are confident that the ground truth perception technology owner’s confidence in our development, reduced traffic accidents and autonomous driving will make a significant contribution to the future,” he said during the company’s Ambition 2030 keynote address.

To realize this goal, Nissan has worked with tech giant Luminaire (Volvo and Mercedes-Benz working with the same person) for its hardware, as well as applied intuition for improved simulation.

Nissan aims to complete the development of its ground truth perception technology by the middle of this decade. It is expected to roll out to selected models immediately before the standard for virtually every new model by FY 2030.
