Mitsubishi Motors Malaysia (MMM) announced along with its 2021 FY sales results that Xpander holds the title of the best-selling non-national MPV in Malaysia. In the 2021 fiscal year ending March 2022, 9,065 units of locally assembled seven-seater were sold, contributing 47.2% to the brand’s overall sales during this period.
Overall, Mitsubishi sold 19,217 units in FY2021, representing a 66% increase over FY20, despite a 6.7% shrinkage of total industry in Malaysia. Mitsubishi said the achievement puts it “comfortably in the top three in the non-national automotive segment.”
An earlier RM1,949 price increase from Xpander to RM91,369 was announced earlier this month (on the road without insurance), which has been blamed for “cost-up limitations” due to the rising cost of MMM equipment. And logistically, even though the price revision was announced with the full SST discount there is still factor 8
“We are aware that a large number of our customers aim to purchase their car before the SST discount expires at the end of June. We are doing our best to meet the booking number, and we have already increased our production capacity by maintaining high quality products, ”said Shinya Ikeda, CEO of Mitsubishi Motors Malaysia in a statement.
The expander for the Malaysian market was manufactured at the Hikum Automotive Manufacturers Facility in Pekan, Pahang, and Malaysia is the third country after Indonesia and Vietnam to manufacture MPV.
Powering the Expander is a 4A91 1.5 liter MIVEC naturally aspirated petrol engine that produces 105 PS and 141 Nm of torque and the drive is sent to the front wheels via a four-speed automatic gearbox. The Xpander’s exterior kit features LED daytime running lights and dual-LED reflective headlamps with 16-inch dual-tone alloy wheels.
Already inside, the equipment includes a quilted leather seat, a 9.0-inch touchscreen head unit with Apple CarPlay / Android Auto, a 360-degree camera system with a dashcam, and more. For safety equipment, the seven-seater MPV gets two airbags, ABS, EBD, Stability Control, Hill Start Assist and Isofix Child Seat Anchor.
