JPJ will not compromise with colliding commercial vehicle operators

On May 12, 2022, a heartbreaking incident occurred near the northbound Menora Tunnel on the North-South Highway, when a car carrying five students of Sultan Azlan Shah University (USAS) caught fire after colliding with two trailers.

The incident claimed the lives of five students, who were hit by an iron fence before colliding with a trailer loaded with tiles, pushing the car they were riding in from behind a trailer.

Following the incident, the Road Transport Department (JPJ) insisted that it would not compromise with the non-consent of any commercial vehicle operator in Malaysia. Investigative measures are being implemented with the Land Public Transport Agency (APAD) for the Road Transport Activities 2010 (ICOP) under the Audit of Occupational Safety and Health Industry Code of Practice to determine the form of legal action that may be taken.

“If the ICOP investigation finds that drivers and operators fail to comply with the APAD and JPJ Terms and Conditions of Service, permits and operator licenses may be suspended or revoked under the provisions of the Land Public Transport Act 2010.

“Meanwhile, if the driver is charged in court, the JPJ may suspend his driving license under the provisions of the Road Transport Act (APJ) 1987,” a statement issued by the JPJ said.

In addition, the PDRM investigation will convict the driver under section 41 (1) of Act 333 APJ and disqualify the driver from holding or obtaining a driving license. The court.

For information, checks in the mySIKAP JPJ system database showed that the trailer driver involved had eight complete crime records and one crime record was still active with 12 demerit points under the Road Offense Demerit Points Awarding System (CJARA). The number of demerit points accumulated will affect the suspension or revocation of the driving license.

“The JPJ would like to emphasize that the goal of the JPJ’s efforts, including the implementation of the ban on goods vehicles (road bans) in conjunction with the Hari Roy Eid-ul-Fitr celebrations in 2022, is to ensure that such accidents are avoided and the accident rate is reduced.

At the same time, all company operators, drivers and owners of commercial vehicles are advised to adhere to all road rules and regulations to create a safe road ecosystem in the country as well as improve the level of road safety. Hopefully, this will not happen again in the future, “said JPJ.

Condolences to the families of the five students involved. May their souls be showered with grace and place among the believers.
