The first standalone model of the BMW M since the M1 was released in 1978 will be a large SUV called the XM, and will be released before the end of 2022. While this may sound like a surprise move, especially considering some of BMW’s traditionally decorated concepts unveiled over the past decade, company boss Frank Van Mill argued that there was a good reason to launch an SUV instead of building another high-power coupe.
“When we did the M1, every car company that wanted to say ‘I have something special’ created a sports car – one that everyone wanted to enter the segment…. Segment. And, compared to other manufacturers, we still miss this ultimate expressive luxury flagship at the top of the M, “he said. Autoblog.
Unveiled as a close-to-production concept in late 2021 and previewed as a close-to-prototype (shown above) in 2022, the XM will be distinguished by a love-it-or-hate-it exterior design. Which, of course, made the video an overnight sensation. Depending on its position as a range-topping M model, it would require a significant amount of energy to survive and would seem to supply BMW. Power will come from a gasoline-electric plug-in hybrid powertrain built around a new V8 engine, designed to develop 650 horsepower.
Here again, Van Meel mentions that the drivetrain is closer to M’s tradition than it may seem at first.
“In our 50-year tradition, we’ve always looked at racing and series-production vehicles to see where everyone is going and what they can learn from each other. System and [our upcoming entry into the LMDh prototype category] There is also a V8-hybrid drivetrain. You see, while it works for racing, it also works for high-performance cars. ”
Some purists argue that a coupe with a mid-mounted engine would be more appropriate. Blame the buyers in this case.
“Of course there are Mercedes-AMG G63, Lamborghini Urus, Aston Martin DBX and many more. You see all these high-end, very expressive models. For customers, this is something that is missing. That was the biggest demand,” he said. 6 came to the conclusion
