For those who have passed their GTI

2022 VW Arteon tries to be the answer for those who have surpassed their GTI or Golf R. This may sound ironic because GTI has long been described as the only car you need. It’s fun, well-made, well-arranged, reasonably efficient and practical. Ditto the Golf R, which adds more fun and all-weather assurance to its all-wheel-drive system. The problem is, the practicality is redefined after you place a kid in the back seat and a mountain of their essentials in the trunk. A GTI Can Get the job done, but it won’t be easy. Enter Artion.

For 2022, it now has the same new engine as the new Golf R, a 2.0-liter turbocharged inline-four that produces 300 horsepower and 295 lb-ft of torque. It offers the Haldex all-wheel-drive system of the previous Golf R, but is standard with the front wheel drive. Not only does it have a lot of thrust to channel through the front wheels, but it also manages to suppress torque steering remarkably… just like the GTI. And indeed, Artion absolutely feels that it has sprouted from the same branch of the family tree as GTI and Golf R. This hasn’t always been the case with Artion, but this latest iteration does just that – even though it’s bigger, heavier, an older variant of VW’s MQB platform car surprisingly doesn’t match its younger, newer siblings. It’s a fun car to drive, and its huge rear seats and Audi Sportback-style trunk give it the extra practicality that anyone looking for has surpassed their GTI or Golf RK. This is definitely a more interesting option than a Taos or Tiguan.

Unfortunately, once you look outside the Volkswagen family, Artion starts to make less sense. Its starting price is a loaded SEL premium R-line north of $ 40,000 which exceeds $ 50,000. Golf R’s price tag may make sense, but you’re in the luxury sedan area, with a list of options that would make this paragraph ridiculously long. True, the Artion is now more powerful than most of this price range (usually enough), but the truth remains that a Volkswagen sedan will never be considered a luxury sedan. Even if some might consider it the only car they need.

What’s new for 2022?

As mentioned above, Arteon received the new Golf R EA888 evo4 engine and DSG transmission for 2022. The base SE also acquires the sporty look of the R-Line. This is at the top of a significant overhaul last year that has improved the chassis (especially the steering is dramatically better), high quality interior materials, updated technology and tweaked styling.

How about Artion interior and in-car technology?

As much as Volkswagen last year improved Artion’s interior with improved materials and better trim, it really did bring it to snap for mid-size sedans like the Honda Accord and Hyundai Sonata. There’s nothing wrong with that – they have nice interiors, but they don’t start at more than 40,000. Compared to Mercedes, Audi, Acura, Genesis, etc., it is not as beautiful as them.

Is it better than a GTI or Golf R? Absolutely, both in terms of material quality as well as technology. The Artion comes standard with Volkswagen’s digital cockpit instrument panel and an 8-inch touchscreen that features VW’s previous-generation technology interface. That’s the decent thing to do, and it should end there.

How big is Arteon?

Compared to VW’s hot hatchbacks as well as luxury cars of the same price, the Artion offers a clear size advantage. Although ultra-smooth sedans like the Artion have traditionally been associated with a loss of practicality, this is not the case here. The rear seat provides plenty of legroom and even the driver’s seat is pushed backwards, while providing enough headroom for someone 6-foot-3. It’s actually like a Honda Accord or a Toyota Camry.

The trunk is similarly impressive. Opening the lid of its empty hatchback gives you 27.2 cubic feet of maximum cargo space, which is about 10 times more than you would find in a traditional family sedan. You’ll also find it in many smaller SUVs, although that volume is achieved in the Artion with larger cargo area lengths and lower altitudes. Once you’ve removed the rigid cargo cover and lowered the 60/40-split rear seat, you’ll be able to transport large, boxy items that don’t fit into a sedan. Now, an SUV (or even the rear seat of the GTI and Golf R) that you can handle won’t be that big or boxy, but it’s one of the best features of the Artion.

What are Arteon Fuel Economy and Performance Specs?

Each Arteon is powered by a 2.0-liter turbocharged inline-four that produces 300 hp and 295 lb-ft of torque. A seven-speed dual-clutch automatic manual, dubbed DSG, standard. The base SE R-line is the front-wheel-drive, while the SEL R-Line and SEL Premium R-line have 4Motion all-wheel drive.

The EPA-estimated fuel economy is combined with 24 miles per gallon city, 34 mpg highway and 28 mpg front-wheel drive, which is excellent for this type of powerful vehicle. It falls on 22/30/25 for all-wheel-drive trim level.

Do you want to drive Arteon?

After last year’s chassis upgrade and this year’s severe power infusion, the Artion now operates the way it does GTI and Golf R (as opposed to the old Passat) from the same branch of the Volkswagen Family Tree. Steering effort and response are indicators of GTI, as well as the ability to suppress torque steering with front-wheel drive. When you ride those 300 horses and the 295-pound-gun, it is impressive to see the wheel out of your hand. However, they will outperform the traction control system and cause wheel hop, which is why choosing an all-wheel drive is still a good idea. It sends back up to 50% of the available energy, reacts and expects reduced traction forward. A brake-based XDS “cross-differential” system mimics a limited-slip differential by braking the inner rear wheel while bending to reduce the understar.

We found Artion to be amazingly fun to drive around tight, tech-savvy mountain roads – either in front – or with all-wheel drive. Steering can certainly make more sense, but the same can be said of many sport sedans. The standard adaptive suspension builds itself depending on the drive mode: Comfort, Normal or Sport. There’s a separate mode available for mixing and matching your preferences, which we’ve used after tightening the sport suspension a bit in the over-the-top space on mountain roads. This versatility and customizability is appreciated and of course hints more at the luxury sport sedan than the Honda Accord, for example. In fact, many luxury sedans do not include adjustable suspension at this price point. The quality of the ride is very good, and we found the internal noise level reasonable.
