CATL has introduced the first battery-switching in China for those who do not have a home

Chinese battery maker CATL is launching a battery-switching service in its country.

Known as Evogo, the service was launched with four stations in Xiamen city A total of 30 stations are planned in the city by the end of the year, meaning drivers will never be more than 1.8 miles from a station, CATL said in a press release.

“In the future, CATL will work with more partners to release more Evogo car models and provide Evogo services in more cities,” the company said.

According to CATL, the service targets EV drivers without home charging. By allowing drivers to switch batteries and quickly recover range, this is a potential option for those who do not have a specific parking space to charge. For urban apartment dwellers, the lack of such an option has become a major obstacle to widespread EV adoption.

With prices starting at the equivalent of $ 61 per month (based on current exchange rates), battery replacement is also relatively affordable. However, prices are adjusted based on how much electricity they use, CATL noted.

One of the biggest hurdles for battery switching today is compatibility and a huge array of different cell formats, packaging methods and cooling techniques. When it unveiled the Evogo system earlier this year, CATL stated that it would release “80% of the global BEV platform-based car models on the market and all BEV platform-based models will be released worldwide in the next three years.”

It is unknown at this time what he will do after leaving the post. Tesla launched a battery swapping pilot program here in 2014 but abandoned it shortly after.

Many thought the battery replacement was dead, and an idea is out of date, but Chinese automaker Neo has embraced it and plans to have about 1,300 stations by the end of the year.

Analysts expect the technology to go to delivery and have a great future in cabs. Startup Ample has also seen a model for this, around the modularized battery interface যদিও although it’s not entirely clear how that company’s solution will be transferred to liquid-cooled vehicles.
