BMW explains why the i7 and 7 series are almost identical

BMW and arch-rival Mercedes-Benz have taken two different approaches to launching the electric flagship model. On the one hand, BMW’s i7 (pictured) looks almost identical to the new 7 Series and the two sedans share a platform. Mercedes-Benz EQS, on the other hand, is unrelated to the S-Class in terms of design and architecture. BMW design boss Adrian van Hoydunk explained the decision.

“It was a deliberate choice. We feel that electric mobility is going to happen but no one knows how fast. So, we felt that if we combine luxury and electric in a car it would be beneficial because, otherwise, in the near future we We can force our customers to make an uncomfortable choice. So, it’s almost an unfair decision that we don’t want our customers to make, “he said. Autoblog Next to the Concours d’Elegans in Villa d’Est.

He refrained from revealing whether the strategy would enter the rest of the range in the coming years, although we’ve seen it before: the iX3 sold in some world markets is almost identical to the X3 which saves for a handful of trim pieces inside and out and, of course, its Drivetrain. The i4 and 4 Series Gran Coupe are very similar. However, some electric BMW models (like the iX) do not have a petrol-powered replica.

When it comes to design, the front end of the i7 and 7 series is consistent with the design language unveiled by the face-lifted X7, but it’s not a look that’s going to extend the rest of the range; Don’t expect the next generation 3 series to look like the 7 shrinking in the wash. The styling of the so-called Russian doll Van Huydunk cannot be expected as he overhauled the rest of the lineup and added new cars.

“We’re going to add more variety to the character of the car. It’s not going to be one [design] Language applies to all of our vehicles. Our lineup is quite large at the moment, so we feel we have to offer these cars to specific customers as there are always different competitors in each category. You could say, broadly speaking, that the 7 Series represents that philosophy at the top end in the luxury section, but we’ll do it across the board. Things like grills and headlights will be different. We’ll save the front-end design you saw on the i7 for cars like the 7 Series, X7 and XM. We will give different interpretations for different vehicles, ”he said briefly.
