2023 Mazda CX-50 Review | 50 is really bigger than 5

So now there is a 2023 Mazda CX-50. But there is still a CX-5. And they’re both compact SUVs that offer the same engine and only a 1,000 gap. All right then. So what do you get with that zero in the name?

OK, although both belong to the technically compact SUV segment, the CX-5 is on the smaller end, while the CX-50 is one of the larger offers. At least on the outside, where the CX-50 is considerably 6.7 inches longer and 3.1 inches wider than its siblings, and one inch higher than the ground. These don’t really translate into a larger interior – you’ll find the rear seat legroom and cargo space virtually identical. Instead, these larger dimensions make the CX-50 feel more noticeable and refined, and look a bit like a medium-sized SUV (the Chevy Blazer is vastly comparable). The extra ground clearance speaks to the CX-50’s more rigid capabilities, which is unique to Mazda’s off-road drive mode, making it more capable of dealing with rough roads. Basically, it is better for long road trips to outdoor leisure spots.

At the same time, the CX-50 is every bit as attractive, driver-centric as the CX-5 and other Mazda to run. It is equally luxurious, proud of the quality of the advanced materials and a tasteful minimalist design aesthetic with some extra angles here and there that are compatible with the slightly more awkward vibe of the CX-50. The bad side? The new-end-display infotainment system won’t be for everyone, even if Apple can be powered by CarPlay and Android Auto Touch, and the technology offers in general aren’t as strong as some competitors. Mazda doesn’t even offer a hybrid version (although some competitors match its muscular turbo engine upgrade).

All in all, we think the Mazda CX-50 is more attractive than the CX-5, which was already one of our top compact SUVs. Turns out 50 is actually more than 5.

The CX-50 is a brand new model for 2023.

How about CX-50 interior and in-car technology?

The interior design is consistent with the rest of the Mazda line, but the blockier, steep wind vents add a bit of muscular vibration to the exterior. Component quality is similarly improved with padded, soft-touch surfaces and high-quality switchgear. Turbo trim layers get soft (and believable) simulated leather on dashes and doors with contrast stitching in a unique cross-cross pattern. It would be hard to find a better cabin than this for the money.

Everything except the base CX-50 comes with a 10.25-inch widescreen display. Most functions, including selecting a radio station, making a Bluetooth phone call, or navigating a navigation system, are performed with the control knob on the center console and the support menu buttons. It usually works well and helps keep your eyes on the road. However, the standard Apple CarPlay and Android Auto connection can be a royal pain to work with a new-end-display system, so Mazda now allows them to be operated with touchscreen capabilities. But only for Apple / Android, nothing else. That’s the decent thing to do, and it should end there.

Another potential technology shortcoming is the gauge. Although the central gauge is a screen that can change its design and provide information, it is inherently small and is enclosed by an analog gauge. We are traditionalists who like the old style gauges, but we know those who would love the big, colorful full-width offers from Kia, Hyundai and Nissan.

How big is the CX-50?

The CX-50 is one of the largest compact SUVs on the outside, but only an average size on the inside. Fault, or thanks, the long front end and general proportions are intended to give preference to a more visually appealing small SUV. There’s really nothing to compare to the regular compact SUV segment, but the Genesis GV70 comes close to the world of luxury. The Chevy Blazer is not too far away.

In the end, though, the CX-50 offers plenty of family-friendly legroom – you’ll still find more than just a Toyota RAV4, for example. Cargo space is better than the 31.4 cubic-foot CX-5, which can handle so many things in its cargo area, but this figure still makes it much less efficient than the RAV4, the Honda CR-V. Hyundai Tucson and, well, the most compact SUV at the moment. Also, despite the CX-50’s outdoor adventure mission, it has only flush roof rails versus more capable and versatile raised roof rails.

What are the CX-50 fuel economy and performance space?

The CX-50 comes with the same powertrain options as the CX-30 and CX-5, with its standard six-speed automatic transmission and all-wheel-drive system.

The standard engine is a 2.5-liter inline-four that produces 187 horsepower and 186 pound-feet of torque. It combines 24 mpg CT, 30 mpg highway and 27 mpg. It is similar to the similarly powered Subaru Outback and Kia Sportage.

The optional engine is a 2.5-liter turbocharged inline-four boosting 227 hp and 310 lb-ft of torque (this is good for 256 hp and 320 lb-ft if you want to pump 93 octane). Some compact SUVs offer a performance upgrade at all, let alone something muscular. Fuel Economy falls on 23/29/25, which is actually a bit better than the CX-5 with the same engine.

Unfortunately, Mazda does not offer a CX-50 hybrid.

What does it feel like to drive a CX-50?

The long and wide footprint of the CX-50 makes it feel more noticeable and fit on the road than the CX-5 and other compact SUVs. It looks like a mid-size model, especially with a turbo engine, and so it will make a happy highway cruiser. It demonstrates Mazda’s general obsession with initial control and overall vehicle mobility, ensuring a natural, immediate and quite simple, exceptional behavior. Even adjustable drive settings are programmed to ensure that the CX-50 behaves and feels consistent regardless of the condition or driving situation বিপর as opposed to trying to behave like five different vehicles with vastly different steering and throttle responses. We sincerely agree with this approach. If there is a more enjoyable compact SUV for driving, we can’t imagine it. Or is it a much more expensive luxury model.

The turbo engine option typically produces much more muscle acceleration than the compact segment. Again, the CX-50 here is a lot like Midsize. Its throttle and transmission response are also spot on. We didn’t get a chance to test the base engine, but considering the CX-50 effectively weighs the same as the CX-5, which we drove with the Base 2.5, it should be quite adequate and have the above-average feedback. .

In preparation for its outdoor adventure, the CX-50 will not crawl on any rocks but is suitable for the dirt roads that most crossover SUV owners are forced to use. With Turbo, its 8.6-inch ground clearance (or 8.3 with base engine) is higher than average, though lower than Subaru’s Forrester and Outback. We also found that the CX-50’s off-road mode does an admirable job of ensuring traction in loosely packed dirt, both on steep hills and at high-speed angles.
