Raya Week saw a lot of 2022 Honda HR-Vs in Malaysia, thanks to our countries being fully in Raya mode this year. This means that many Singaporeans have come to Malaysia with their new 2022 HR-Vs to visit their families.

When will Malaysians be able to do Balik Kampung with the new HR-V? The new Honda HR-V will arrive in Malaysia sometime in the second half of 2022, but perhaps not in time for Hari Roy to appear.

The HR-V is a crucial model for Honda Malaysia, a pioneer in the entry-level SUV segment that now competes with competitors such as the Proton X50 and X70 and the Toyota Corolla Cross. Honda Malaysia will probably launch it here as a locally integrated car Just like the farewell model.

Which version of 2022 Honda HR-V will we get?

First, we can cancel the Honda HR-V in the US market because it is only known as the HR-V there. Globally, this special SUV will be called Honda ZR-V and it is located between HR-V and CR-V.

This version of the “HR-V” is a larger vehicle and is based on the Civic rather than the City, aimed at customers who see that the CR-V is too large for their needs.

This is the model of HR-V that we will get, which will get Singapore, Thailand and Indonesia. But notice that there are two different ‘faces’. On the left is the ‘regular’ face, which plays horizontal bars. The car on the right has an ‘RS’ face, with a sporty look.

Indonesia gets both faces – usually the E and E SE variants with the ambitious 1.5 liter engine get regular faces. The Sportier ‘RS’ face is reserved for models with a 1.5 liter turbo engine. In Thailand, the RS Face is offered, but not with the turbo engine – the RS Face is associated with the E: HIV hybrid engine there. Thailand also gets a version of the hybrid with the common face.

We think Honda Malaysia can only offer Sportier ‘RS’ face in Malaysia with multiple engine choice. After all, hybrid city models get RS faces here, so it could be the same for HR-V. And it would be strange not to get the RS look for the sporty turbo model. So here we can look at both an HR-V RS Turbo and an HR-V RS e: HEV.

But this is certainly a pure guess, we will see. If there is only one variant that gets RS Outlook, it will probably be a hybrid, like other Honda models. Which face do you prefer – normal face or RS face? We think the RS face will be more consistent with the taste buds of Malaysia.

The 2022 HR-V is now a big SUV?

The current Honda HR-V for sale in Malaysia has the following dimensions – 4,346 mm length x 1,790 mm width x 1,605 mm height, with a 2,610 mm wheelbase.

The 2022 HR-V measures the following – 4,385 mm length x 1,790 mm width x 1,590 mm height, with a 2,610 mm wheelbase.

Surprisingly, the wheelbase of the new car is the same as that of the outgoing car. Maintaining the same width it grows mostly in terms of external length.

You can see from the comparison of the side profile above that the front and rear overhangs of the new HR-V are a bit longer than the outgoing models.

Which engine will get 2022 Honda HR-V in Malaysia?

Worldwide, the 2022 Honda HR-V is offered with three engine choices. The base engine is a typically aspirated 1.5 liter engine. For those who want more power, there is a turbocharged 1.5 liter engine. And then there are the E: HIV hybrids who are associated with a little more technology in their cars.

1.5 liter four cylinder NA engine
– 121 PS at 6,600 rpm
– 145 Nm at 4,300 rpm
– CVT transmission

1.5 liter four cylinder turbo engine
– 177 PS at 6,000 rpm
– 240 Nm at 1,700-4,500 rpm
– CVT transmission

1.5 liter four cylinder E: HIV hybrid system
– The Atkinson cycle
– 105 hp, 127 Nm from engine
– 131 hp, 253 Nm total system output

E: In the HIV hybrid system, the 1.5 liter engine works with two electric motors. E: HIV systems most of the time use the engine as a generator and an electric motor, which also acts as a starter. The second electric motor is larger – it is used to drive the front wheel most of the time. At higher speeds where the system calculates that it is more efficient to drive the wheels directly for a four-cylinder engine, a lock-up clutch is employed and the engine drives the wheel instead of the motor.

It is not possible that we get a 1.5 liter usually aspirated engine here. The outgoing HR-V uses a 1.8-liter engine to offer its non-hybrid – reducing the size of an engine for a typically ambitious engine in an SUV body can be a problem for customers here. So we think the 2022 HR-V could only be a turbo or hybrid offer in Malaysia.

How much will the 2022 Honda HR-V cost?

It’s hard to guess. The price of the outgoing HR-V currently being sold in Malaysia is here.

2022 Honda HR-V 1.8 E – RM 104,000.21
2022 Honda HR-V 1.8 SE – RM 105,363.85
2022 Honda HR-V 1.8 V – RM 113,421.92
2022 Honda HR-V 1.5 Hybrid – RM 113,954.82
2022 Honda HR-V 1.8 RS – RM 118,581.81

However, keep in mind that these prices are included with the current SST discount, which is due to expire on June 30, 2022. We need to go back some time in 2019 to set the price with SST, as the new HR-V will probably have the highest SST included price. We can see that SST represents about 4-5% of the price tag.

2019 Honda HR-V 1.8 E – RM108,800.00
2019 Honda HR-V 1.8 V – RM 118,800.00
2019 Honda HR-V 1.5 Hybrid – RM 120,800.00
2019 Honda HR-V RS – RM 124,800.00

Prices for the new HR-V may be a bit higher due to the high position of the proposed engines, if we can only get the Turbo and Hybrid, with the exception of the generally desired 1.5.

If you look at the price of the new City Hatchback, the E: HEV RS is priced at RM 107,783.09 whereas the most expensive petrol model is priced at only RM 91,708.51. The City sedan e: HEV RS 1.5 V is priced at RM 105,950.45 compared to RM 90,212.36. This is a significant premium for a hybrid system – about RM15k or about 17% off the premium.

Because the new hybrids use Honda’s new i-MMD system which is more expensive than the outgoing i-DCD system because it is more advanced. You are driving an electric car with an ICE generator.

If we add 17% of the 2019 HR-V 1.8 V’s RM 118,800.00 as the baseline with the SST price tag, then the maximum range of the new HR-V e: HEV RS model can be priced at RM138k. It will still be cheaper than the SR starting price with the last RM151k of the CR-V, so this is a real possibility.
